Congratulations – Georgia Thomson-Laing

Lakes380 team member Georgia Thomson-Laing received a PhD scholarship with the Victoria University of Wellington to investigate historical changes in the presence and abundance of culturally and ecologically significant species (tuna and other native fish) in New Zealand’s lakes and see how they responded to natural and human induced changes. Georgia will be supervised by Jamie Howarth (VUW) and Susie Wood (Cawthron).

She was also awarded one of the University of Otago’s Young Alumni Awards. The awards recognized 20 alumni in their twenties, who are making an impact in their professions and communities!
Well deserved, congrats Georgia!

Sampling for fish eDNA in lakes

eDNA is an amazing new tool that can help us understand and protect the taiao (environment) - but it can't do everything. It needs to be used to complement other techniques and aligned with Indigenous and local knowledge. These new posters highlight these benefits and provide suggestions on some questions to ask before launching into an eDNA based project!

When working with eDNA projects we like to co-design the project with our partners. We also love sharing our knowledge and helping train the next generation of scientists to become sentinels of the taiao.
