Lake Hochstetter is part of a network of fluvio-glacial lakes. The lake and its catchment show a high degree of naturalness in terms of vegetation. The catchment area is relatively unmodified beech forest and this gives the lake its typical amber coloured waters. The lake is important for Paradise Shelduck and an endemic fish, the Giant Kokopu.
